“Max, what are you doing?” an antagonizing voice echoed across a caged void.
“D-drawing,” his own voice squeaked, aware that other tiny voices were snickering.
“Max, is drawing the same thing as times tables?”
“ . . . No.”
“Let me see those. You need to be on task. You’re in the fourth grade, mister. Draw on your own time.”
“But I-”
“Want me to tell Mommy?”
“No, no, no! Please, I’ll be good.”
There was an explosion of giggling.

Snakes.
A fetid odor coiled and uncurled about the murky sludge and the musty haze. Lichen and moss knew no bounds here. Ivy and vines slowly slithered their sapping appendages along anything that stood relatively still. The muddy earth, absorbing moisture from the saturated humidity, gave birth to baroque spirals of festering trunks and venomous flora. It provided brief areas where termite-infested stumps symbolically marked the site of death, a metaphor so rare in a place so vivid with the constant evolution of life.
It was a swamp and swamps had-
“Snakes,” Max moaned, his ears nearly ble

I remember there was this alien girl in Lum's class named Pepper who could shed her skin like a snake. The main character decided to wear the discarded Pepper suit and was blasted by Lum, who was chasing Pepper.

Yeah, I think it is on Youtube under the title of the anime that Lum, the Oni invader is from. She has a brother who caused trouble for the main character, and a little cousin who kept billing all of the oni's damages to the main character's house.

Actually, i hadn't realized it was an anime or manga for some reason... started watching when i found out the same person who did ranma half did it - it's amusing!

apparently, though, this has stuck in my head for all this time - enough so that i immediately started trying to hunt it down, with the thought - "Wait! that's lum!"
